March 11, 1933

Robert T. Bob Edge was born on March 11, 1933, as a fourth generation Texan and a direct descendant of the pioneering Grayson family of Montague, County. Raised in Kilgore, Texas, Bob spent his summers working as a roustabout in the oil fields. He soon made the decision to go into the oil business and enrolled at the University of Colorado as a geology major.

Aggie Spirit

Deciding that geology was not his thing, he enrolled in the business school at Texas A&M where he found his life-long passion in the Aggie culture and in the Corps of Cadets. In fact, many clients and colleagues have been entertained by listening to the Aggie War Hymn while riding in Bob’s car. To the end, Bob epitomized the Fightin’ Aggie spirit. He was a staunch supporter of A&M financially, athletically, and educationally.

Raising The Bar

After graduating from A&M in 1959, Bob enrolled at SMU law school, & received his Bachelor of Laws in 1965 – passing the Texas Bar shortly thereafter. He was soon hired by Tishman Realty & Construction Company and moved his family to Los Angeles, where he would lease office buildings for the next 9 years.

In August 1974

Bob Edge relocated from California to open Cushman & Wakefield’s Dallas office.  After, in his words, “starving for nearly two years in a brutal recession,” Bob handled the landmark Mobil Oil transaction at what is today known as Renaissance Tower.

From that time on, Bob became a giant in the DFW real estate community handling some of the largest and most prestigious transactions in DFW history

Always Aiming High

As one of the most active brokerage professionals in the country, Bob handled many of the area’s largest real estate transactions, including the American Airlines relocation to DFW.

Hall of Fame

Of the many accolades he received over his 40 years in real estate, the Stemmons Service Award and induction into the Real Estate Hall of Fame were at the top of his list. Bob was a member of the Board of TACA, and also on the Board of Directors for the YMCA,  Jesuit College Preparatory School and Jesuit Scholarship Committee.

Fighting Crime

Bob was also named Father of the Year, and was the recipient of the Directors Community Leadership Award from the FBI and a Commendation from the City of Dallas for his outstanding contributions and service in fighting youth crime and drug abuse.

Charitable Interests

Some of the many charities Bob supported are Children’s Medical Center, DFW Humane Society, Dog & Kitty City of Dallas, and Texas Scottish Rite Hospital. He was an avid proponent of rescuing dogs and cats and labored to find them adoptive and loving families.

Even in an industry that’s packed with star power, Bob Edge stood out. Not only for his professional accomplishments, but also for his unwavering commitment to giving back to an industry and city he loved, and tirelessly nurturing the next generation of commercial real estate professionals.

Throughout his career he touched the lives of many. Here are remembrances from some of his closest colleagues, industry competitors, and biggest fans.

“Bob Edge opened the Dallas office of Cushman & Wakefield 40 years ago, and I was fortunate enough to be hired by him 37 years ago. He was a terrific leader and top-quality kind of guy. We worked on a lot of transactions together and he was always a true professional.

Bill McClung, Executive Vice President, Cushman & Wakefield of Texas

“I was partners with Bob for more than 16 years. He was a wonderful mentor, friend, father, and partner. He always preached integrity—always doing the right thing, even if it meant that it was not in your financial best interest. He was a great mentor who shared his knowledge readily with anyone and everyone who simply asked.”

Matt Heidelbaugh, Executive Director, Cushman & Wakefield of Texas Inc.

“Bob pioneered the modern real estate brokerage model as we know it today. He brought a new a new level of sophistication to the real estate service process, redefined best practices, and set a new standard of professionalism in our industry.”

Mike Wyatt, Executive Vice President, Cushman & Wakefield of Texas Inc.

I learned a great deal from him. He was always ethical, always prepared, and he was an incredible optimist. In this business, you hear the word “no” a lot. But it never got Bob down; in his mind, there was always another opportunity. His optimism benefitted us all. Bob was a true leader and one of the icons in our industry. He was also a joy to be around. He loved to golf and have fun. He loved Cushman & Wakefield and was a great mentor to a lot of people—me included.

He taught me to be prepared and to pay attention to the details. Bob had a fantastic work ethic, but, as my father also taught me, he knew it was just as important to enjoy yourself as you go along.”

As a non-practicing attorney and seasoned broker, he was a fountain of knowledge. He loved to help young people—both within the office and outside. This can be witnessed in his many years as chairman of the Dallas Youth Crime Commission. Also, when you think of all the people he mentored or helped in terms of their careers, it would be hard to calculate the impact or the number of real estate professionals he influenced over his 40+ years in DFW.”

Matt Heidelbaugh, Executive Director, Cushman & Wakefield of Texas Inc.

“Of course he loved A&M more than anybody I’ve ever met. He was unwavering in his support—through thick and thin—until the day he died. He always wanted, as he told me many times, ‘To die in the saddle …’ And that’s what he did—doing what he loved most, mentoring young people and passing the torch to the next generation.”

“I will always be indebted to his mentorship. As a young professional, he inspired supreme confidence, demanded excellence, and taught me how to compete. He was never too busy to help. His door was always open. I most admired how he conducted himself as professional. Bob was a true gentleman, a man of deep conviction and old school values. You always knew where you stood with Bob because his word and handshake were never compromised.”

Mike Wyatt, Executive Vice President, Cushman & Wakefield of Texas Inc.

“I will always cherish the last time I saw Bob, just a few weeks ago. He was doing what he loved. He was impeccably dressed, sitting in his light blue leather chair, holding his red pen in hand and reviewing a lease with two of our young professionals. I had an immediate flashback and for a moment I saw myself right there beside them, listening intently and learning from the master. I was truly blessed to have worked with and been mentored by such a remarkable man.”

Mike Wyatt, Executive Vice President, Cushman & Wakefield of Texas Inc.

Professionally, the industry has lost an icon; those of us who were fortunate enough to know him personally have lost a true friend. Bob was a quiet leader, strong and impactful. Many will try to emulate him, but they won’t be able to.

What Bob Edge had was special—something you can’t learn. It came with his generation. The qualities Bob had were intuitive … confidence without ego, loyalty without condition, sharing without expectation, and teaching from the heart.
